CHAPTER 10

Gabriel’s phone was blinking when he woke on Thursday and when he listened to the voicemail, it was Darla’s voice he heard. “I’m sorry to inform you that your lesson with Quinn Hadley this morning has been canceled. Quinn will call you when she becomes available to reschedule if needed. Otherwise, please attend your next scheduled lesson as usual.” After a pause, Darla dropped the official tone. “And, on a more personal note, she said she had a great time last night. I’m happy for you both. Good-bye!”

Laughing, he stood and started stretching, getting himself ready to get through his yoga flow as if nothing were different. Unsure of whether he could do it as well on his own as he did with Quinn there, he did the best he could, feeling rejuvenated when he was done. Lying on the floor in corpse pose, he heard Micah bang through the front door.

“Jesus Christ, what happened to you?” Micah barked as he caught sight of Gabriel on the floor of the living room.

“Quinn had to cancel my lesson for today—her son’s sick—so I did the flow myself,” he said. “No laughing, asshole.”

“Takes that much out of you, does it?” Micah asked, tossing a bottle of water to his friend and sitting on the couch.

“No, this is an actual pose. Corpse pose.”

“Well, that’s what I thought you were when I walked in here.” He glanced around the house and just when Gabriel was about to ask what he was looking for he said, “Are her and the kid here?”

“No, I imagine they’re at her apartment.”

“How’d last night go? Where’d you take her?”

“Harbor House.”

Micah sucked air through his teeth. “Nice. There goes a couple bills.”

“Yeah, but it was worth it.”

“Uh-oh.”

“What?” Gabriel said, sitting up.

“’It was worth it?’” Micah repeated, doing a terrible imitation of Gabriel’s mild western twang. “Did you nail her?”

“No!” Gabe said, coming off the mat to a stand faster than he should have. Blood rushed out of his head and he swayed. “Woah.” He took a minute to steady himself before he continued. “We had dinner, talked, and had a good time. That was pretty much it.”

“’Pretty much?’ Since when do you do ‘pretty much,’ with women? What else happened that you don’t want me to know?”

“Come on, man, it’s personal.”

“You’ve told me details about your sex life I never wanted to know, at every opportunity. And now all of a sudden it’s personal?” Micah wore a knowing grin on his face Gabriel would have loved to punch off his head. “Now who’s had a number done on him by a woman?”

“Oh, hell,” Gabriel groaned, scrubbing his hands over his face. “I’m never gonna live this down, am I?”

“Nope. You’re in love. Welcome to the Thunderdome, Gabe.”

“No. That’s not it.” When one has no defense, denial is what’s left.

“You’ve changed your whole modus operandi with this woman. You’re taking her to the Harbor House,” he started, ticking off the things he was saying on his fingers. “You’re doing yoga, for Christ’s sake.
